Why this exists
Myself (Mark) and my partner Laura and beloved welsh collie Hobo, got tired of guidebooks that make every route sound like a gentle stroll and every summit like a guaranteed triumph. The Welsh mountains we call are emotional home are brilliant and brutal at the same time, so we decided that they deserve honest writing from ourselves and other members of the fast growing hiking community.
Welsh Hobo started as a notebook we kept for our personal use which eventually gave rise to the idea of having a place where we could share our views, success and of course failures — giving insights into the conditions and kit we used and most importantly what the view actually looked like at the end of our journey . Eventually it became a website. The idea is simple: give walkers the kind of information a mate who knows the hills would give you, not the sanitised version.
Where both based in Wales and spend what ever available time we have trying to get as out as much as possible on to the Welsh hills and mountains. Hopefully you will also find some recipes popping up as in another life I was a professional chef and now love cooking over fire on a mountain side .
What we stand for
Honest conditions
If a path is a bog in October, we say so. If a scramble is harder than the grade suggests, we say that too.
No fluff
No stock photography of people laughing on summits. No affiliate-driven gear lists. Just useful information.
Community first
The best route knowledge comes from people who walk regularly. That's why community stories and trip reports matter as much as the curated guides.
Leave it better
Take your rubbish out. Stick to the path when the ground is soft. Respect the land and the people who live on it.
